Mrs. Thelma Ruth Payton, age 79, of 9 Morningside Drive, NW, Rome, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at a local medical center.Mrs. Payton was born on June 13, 1925 in Chattooga County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Mack Arden and Julia Bryant Arden. She was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church for thirty six years where she had taught Sunday School and had been a member of the choir. Mrs. Payton worked in the medical record department at Floyd Medical Center until 1986 when she retired. She loved to cook, paint and sew.. She loved her three granddaughters and they loved her. Mrs. Payton was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Phillip Payton on January 3, 1997, two brothers, Paul and Mack Arden and infant sister, Edna Arden.Survivors include her husband, L.R. Payton, to whom she was married October 31, 1947; one son and daughter in-law, Stephen and Mitzi Payton of Summerville, GA; three brothers, Dwight and Larry Arden of Trion, GA and Charles Arden of Mentor, Ohio; one sister, Doris Fletcher of Summerville, GA; three granddaughters, Anna Payton and twins, Hannah and Haley Payton.Funeral services for Mrs. Payton will be held Saturday morning, November 20th at 11:00 am at the Oaknoll Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin "Skider" Chatham and Rev. Charles Evans officiating. Interment will follow in West Hills Cemetery, Trion, Georgia.The family will receive friends at the Oaknoll Chapel tonight (Friday) from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. At other hours the family may be contacted at the residence.Pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 pm Saturday and include, Mike Morrison, Fred Miller, Larry Davis, Pete Culbreth, Bill Callan and Richard Didrick.The Oaknoll Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home, 2542 Shorter Avenue, Rome has charge of the funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Ruth Payton.
