Mr. Thomas H. Barker, age 84, of Rome, GA, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, following an extended illness.
Mr. Barker was born on May 21, 1923, in Piedmont, AL, the son of the late Green Mac Barker and Florence Casey Barker. He was raised in Piedmont and was a graduate of Auburn University. Mr. Barker was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy. He was a participant in the Normandy invasion in June of 1944. Mr. Barker retired from Bell Laboratories and was a holder of 4 patents relating to his work. He was a longtime member of the Kiwanis and former President of Augusta Road Kiwanis (Greenville, SC). Mr. Barker was a volunteer for Junior Achievement and a merit badge advisor for the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a longtime member of the Travelers Rest United Methodist Church. Mr. Barker was married on December 27, 1948, to Christine Moore Barker, and she preceded him in death on December 1, 2003. Also preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Norwood Barker, Weldon Barker and Gilbert Barker; sisters, Loral Barker Billingsley, Elzada Barker Gordon and Frankie Barker Shaddix.
Mr. Barker is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Trudy Barker of Rome, and Bob and Carol Barker of Ostrander, OH; four grandchildren, Nick Barker and Tim Barker, both of Rome, and Zane Barker and Kendra Barker, both of Ostrander.
Funeral services for Mr. Barker will be held on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Mac McCurry officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Honor Guard from the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion in charge of military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home.
