Thomas �Tommy� L. Carnes, Sr., 76, of Cartersville, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Redmond Regional Hospital. He was born in Fulton County on Dec. 10, 1932 and was the son of the late Leslie Carnes and the late Lula Mae East. He retired from General Motors in March of 1989 after eighteen years of service. Mr. Carnes was a member of the UAW, was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved sports, and loved watching his grandsons play ball. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a great friend to many. Preceding him in death are his parents; his sister, Gladys Brookshire; and a brother, James Morris Carnes.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Baker Carnes; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Carnes, Jr. and his wife, Landis; his grandchildren, Thomas �Trey� Carnes III and Andrew �Drew� Carnes all of Cartersville; his siblings, Patsy Milam of Witumpka, Alabama, Richard and Dottie Carnes, Shirley and Bill York, and Faye and John Orton all of Dadeville, Alabama; Larry and Verna Carnes of Rocky Face, Georgia; Cathy Paul of Dadeville, Alabama; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 27, 2009 in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Parnick Jennings, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton with John Orton in charge at the graveside.
Active pallbearers are Trey Carnes, Drew Carnes, Richie Morris, Ricky Carnes, Steve Morris and Carey Carnes. Scott Carnes will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
The family will receive friends at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 430 Cassville Road, Cartersville on Sunday from 4 � 6 p.m.
