Viola Coons Ayer, 83, died Friday, October 9, 2009 in Clearwater, Florida. Born March 12, 1926 in Huntsville, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Harry Joshua Coons and the late Sue Taylor Coons. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harry Coons, Jr.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Howard Hinesley and Ann and Steve Wiggins; her son and daughter-in-law, Ric and Lynn Ayer; her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Joe McDaniel; her sister-in-law, Alleda Coons; her grandchildren, Suzanne Hinesley, Elizabeth Gettig, Jay Hinesley, Caroline Sandel, Raley Wiggins, Elizabeth Whitehead, and Meade Ayer; three great-granddaughters; and her nieces and nephews.
A native of Huntsville, Alabama and a graduate of Auburn University, Columbia University, and the University of Alabama, Mrs. Ayer served as principal of East Clinton School until she relocated to Tuscaloosa where she joined the faculty of the University of Alabama as a reference librarian and Assistant Professor. An active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, she was a member of the Daughters of the King and the Bell Choir. She also taught Sunday school and was active in Cursillo.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 30, 2009 in the Bibb Memorial Chapel of the Church of the Nativity, 208 Eustis Ave SE, Huntsville, Alabama 35801. A brief ceremony of interment of ashes will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Christ Church, 605 Lurleen B. Wallace Blvd. N, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Church in Tuscaloosa and designated for the Music Ministry.
