Walter Mathis

Mr. Walter C. Mathis of 105 Chief Vann Dr., Rome Georgia was called home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 17, 2004.Mr. Mathis was born in Etowah County, Alabama on August 14, 1941. He was the son of the late Carl Franklin Mathis and Geneva Winford Mathis. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Mathis was a loving and devoted husband and father who loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends. He unselfishly helped his community and neighbors with anything they needed. Mr. Mathis retired from G.E. after twenty nine and a half years of dedicated service. He was Vice-President of the local I.U.E. for sixteen years. Mr. Mathis was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway American Legion Post # 5. He was a devoted Braves and Crimson Tide fan. Mr. Mathis coached Pony League baseball during the 1980's. He was an avid gardener and a yellow dog Democrat. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl F. Mathis Jr.; two sisters Bonnie Vance of Gadsden, Alabama and Carlene Vaughn of Centre, Alabama.Mr. Mathis is survived by his loving wife of twenty nine years, Wanda Mathis; his cherished daughter Jennifer Mathis-Fisher and her husband George L. Fisher III; two step sons, Anthony Scarborough of Johnson City, Louisiana., and Michael Scarborough of Cartersville, Georgia; two brothers, William Mathis of Rome, Georgia and Roger Mathis of Gadsden, Alabama; two sisters, Patsy Mayes and her husband J.W. Mayes of Gadsden, Alabama and Teresa Payne of Glencoe, Alabama; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends also survive.Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00p.m. at the Oaknoll Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Stockton officiating. Internment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.Mr. Mathis will lie in-state at Jennings Oaknoll Chapel where the family will receive friends this evening from 7:00p.m. until 9:00p.m.Floral tributes will be accepted or donations may be made to the American Diabetic Association, 512 Avenue A, Rome, GA 30165 or to the American Cancer Society, 1825 Barrett Lakes Blvd. Suite 280, Kennesaw, GA 30144 or call 1-800-ACS-2345.Pallbearers who are asked to meet at Jennings Oaknoll Chapel at 1:30p.m. Wednesday and include Adam Allen, Cory Allen, Terry Vaughn, Jason Vaughn, Carey Mayes, Dale Mathis and Keith Mobbs.
