Warren Mathis

Warren �Audie� Mathis, age 76, 1 Fir Street, Riverside Village, Rome died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at his residence after a 20 year battle with cancer and a lingering cancer illness for the past two plus years.



Audie Mathis was born April 6, 1933, Floyd County, Georgia, son of the late Ira Claude Mathis and the late Flora Ellis Mathis. For several years he was co-owner of Discount Tires, Cooper Tire Dealer. He began his tire business in 1986 at the old curb market building on 6th Avenue for which his business was named later, moving to another Rome landmark building �Maple on the Hill,� Calhoun Avenue until 1989 when he had the first cancer illness. One of his hobbies was designing and building unique houses with personal landscaping. Traveling was another hobby having visited every state within the U.S. and abroad. He is preceded in death by a brother, Richard Mathis, brother-in-law, Paul Chambers, Jr. and an Uncle Clay Mathis. Also, by special friends, Tom Fout and Jim Reece.



Audie is survived by his wife, of 59 years, Elizabeth Chambers Mathis; a daughter, Teresa Diane Cordle of Rome, two sons, Warren Toby Mathis of Hiram, GA and Michael David Mathis of Alachua, FL; twin granddaughters, Hayley Elizabeth Mathis and Hilary Jane Mathis of Alachua, FL. Special out-of-town friends include Maggie and Rev. Del Lind of Minneapolis, MN, Laura and Ken Statza of Milwaukee, WI, Celine Zaglaniczny of Holly, MI, Margerite Foster, Sandi and Mike Ellis, Pauline and Keith Williams of Fort Myers, FL, Pat, Danny, and Nick Steiger of Seymour, TN, and Dr. William Silver of Atlanta, GA.



A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, November 6, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Dr. Talmadge Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery.



The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel.



The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Heritage Chapel by 1:30 P.M.: Ronnie Winn, Jerry Blankenship, Fred Moore, Houston Farmer, Malcolm Talley, Lee Alley, Jerry Cordle, and Joe Pegg.
