William Barton

March 5, 1920 — January 10, 2009

Mr. William Monroe Barton, age 88 of Ash Street Rome ,GA, died Saturday morning, January 10, 2009 in a local hospital following an accident.



Mr. Barton was born in Plainville, GA; on March 5, 1920 the son of the late Wilford Manley and Nell Miller Barton Mr. Barton was a �Celanese Village kid� for 71 years and was known far and wide for his beautiful craftsmanship as a master gunsmith and builder of custom guns and stocks, He was a hunter, fisherman, trapper, a wonderful wood crafter and musician. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barton is preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Vivian Howell Barton.; a son Dickie Howell Barton; one sister, Wilma Reed and; one brother Leslie Barton.



He is Survived by two daughters Sheila Barton of Atlanta, and Sherry Monroe Barton (Jerry) Gatlin, of Rome; two granddaughters, Stacey Harvey of Ocala,Fla.. and Meagan Gatlin Sopata of Rome; three great- grandchildren, Santino and Athena Del Valle of Ocala and Barton Sopata of Rome; four sisters and brothers�in-law Mary and Guy McJunkin, Sarah Howell Lingerfelt, Herman Reed, Mary Love Howell and Jackie Newsome Howell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.



Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heritage Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Branton, Rev. Randy Lambert, and Dr. Tony Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in the Floyd Memory Gardens with The Honor Guard of Shanklin-Attaway American Legion Post #5 will conduct military rites.



The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until the funeral hour in the Heritage Chapel of the McGuire, Jennings, & Miller Funeral Home.

The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers: Chip Cromer, Jerry Gatlin, Terry Lingerfelt, Larry Pass, Phil Reed and Kurt Sopata. Great Grandsons Santino Del Valle and Barton Sopata will serve as honorary pallbearers.
