Mr. William Lamar (Poker) Oliver, age 80, of Silver Creek, GA died Friday, July 30, 2004 at a local hospital.Mr. Oliver was born in Lanett, Alabama on December 13, 1923 son of the late Delbert Oliver and Jen Lou Austin. Poker was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U S Air Force from March 1943 to January 1946. He was a 1941 graduate of Model High School and where he participated in several sports. Mr. Oliver was retired from Burlington Industries after 43 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and since 1948 had been a member of Callier Springs Golf Club where he loved to play golf. He played baseball in the Old Textile League. For the last 15 years, he has made his home in Silver Creek with his sister, Sandra Withrow Smith. Mr. Oliver is preceded in death by his parents; step father, S.A. Austin and two brothers-in-law, Gene Withrow and T.F. Smith.Survivors include two sisters and brother-in-law, Sandra Withrow Smith of Silver Creek and Vanita Holden and Jim Holden of Shannon; three special nieces and nephews, Debbie and Walt Oliver of Shannon, Jennie and Emmett Highland of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Tracey and Wayne Helton of Shannon; four special great nephews and a great niece, Cole Oliver of Shannon, Brent Helton of Shannon, Conor and Madison Highland of Wilmington, N.C. Special friends Bobby and Betty Jones of Shannon.Graveside and interment services for Mr. William Lamar (Poker) Oliver will be held at 2 PM Monday, August 2, 2004, at East View Cemetery with the Dr. Talmadge Barnes and Rev. John Hooper officiating.Mr. Oliver will remain at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00- 5:00 P.M. and at other hours will be at the residence of a sister, Sandra Withrow Smith, 50 Ridgeview Dr., Silver Creek.The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers and are requested to meet at Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home at 1:15 P.M.
