Bill was co-owner of Smith & Smith Land Surveyors in Cartersville, GA, with his brother, A. Lee, through Lee's retirement, and continued as sole proprietor through June 2024. At the time of his death, Bill had provided land surveying services for over 50 years throughout Georgia, serving for a time as the Bartow County Land Surveyor. In 1970, at the age of 23, he became the youngest man to become a licensed surveyor at that time.

He spent his days off with cherished family fishing for trout in the streams and working on his beloved '66 Corvette. Bill enjoyed his early morning meals with friends down at Cody J's where they shared many jokes and fond memories. In the beautiful fall season, he would ride the roads in classic cars through the high mountains of Tennessee with his wife and dear friends, and weekend evenings were also often spent with loved ones at Zorba's and The Homestead in Rome.

He and his bride, Shellie, married April 25th, 1970, in Ringgold, GA. He was her protector, gentle giant, and other half.

They were blessed to raise two wonderful girls with unconditional love, patience, and integrity. To their daughters, he was their Superman, their rock, and the center of their universe. Their most trusted role model, he was simply irreplaceable. As his grandchildren grew, he found himself in his home-grown mechanic's garage teaching them the ins and outs of tinkering on old Squarebodies. There, he and his granddaughter created the Redneck Tire Company out of their love and joy for building classic cars and trucks. Not long after, he was given the opportunity to be a great-grandfather. He became more than a hero to them, teaching them how to swing a bat, shoot hoops, and butter pancakes – not to mention enjoying them. Most importantly, he set the foundation for them to become amazing men. Of course, we could never forget how much he "didn't like" pets even though his wife let all of the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have Noah's ark. When he thought no one was looking, you'd find him curled up with them all or sharing food off his plate.

One of the greatest men God let walk the earth will be remembered in awe and with great love for the rest of forever in our hearts.
