George's Truth

George & I served together during the Vietnam War. We were Marines with 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment whose nickname was "the walking dead"... We both served in 1st Platoon, Alpha Company of that battalion. On 26 Dec 1967 while serving as a radioman, I was shot and returned to Bethesda Naval Hospital outside Washington, DC. George continued on, and was one of 64 Marines who defended Hill 64 3KM west of Khe Sanh. On 8 Feb 1968, NVA attacked Hill 64 around 0400 after a heavy fog had set in. 27 Marines died during the ensuing firefight. Many others were wounded. George was among them. Upon his return to the US, he visited me in Behtesda. Somehow, he seemed to sense my negative outlook re my shatted left leg. He told a story of success on Hill 64 that might not have been the whole truth but one that lifted my spitits during a dufficult time. I will remember him for that. Rest with the warriors, George, and Semper Fi!
