Obituary for Fred Gunn, Jr.

Mr. Fred Gunn, Jr., 85, of Cartersville, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Cartersville Medical Center.

Mr. Gunn was born on January 25, 1931 in Bradenton, Florida, the son of the late Fred Gunn, Sr. and Rosa Mae Newton Gunn.

Mr. Gunn was a lifelong resident of Bartow County and well known in the community for his role in local politics, business affairs, and community events. For many years Mr. Gunn hosted breakfasts on the third Sunday of each month at his home on Pettit Creek. During election season local and state politicians would take their place on Mr. Gunn’s “Political Stump” and give a speech on their behalf. In the late 1950’s Mr. Gunn was Chief of Police in Adairsville while also running a local plumbing business. In 1961 Mr. Gunn left Adairsville and moved to Cartersville where he began working for Sherriff Frank Atwood as jailer and Deputy Sherriff. Later on, Mr. Gunn would become the founder and CEO of Gunn Contracting, Inc. He was a veteran of the National Guard, a member of the Cartersville Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM for sixty years, and a member of Rowland Springs Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening, deep sea fishing, his farm animals and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his step-mother, Bonnie Gunn; his brother, Clyde Gunn; his sister, Dorothy Gunn Herod; and a grandson, Paul Wesley Gunn.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-six years, Annis Heath Gunn of Cartersville; his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Darlene Gunn and Freddie and Tonya Gunn; his daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Ronny Gossett and Fredia and Tony Hall all of Cartersville; his grandchildren, Amanda Silvers of Kingston, Michael Gunn, Bryan Hall, Justin Gunn, Jessica Williams, and Jason Gunn all of Cartersville; twelve great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Tom Akins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the Reverends Doug Harris and Paul Battles officiating. Interment will be private. The Bartow County Sherriff’s Department will serve as Honor Guard and the Cartersville Lodge F&AM will be in charge of Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rowland Springs Baptist Church, 79 Rowland Springs Road SE, Cartersville, Ga. 30121 in Mr. Gunn’s memory.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Mosley, Michael Howren, Steve Stewart, Steve Taylor, Gene Camp, Jimmy Tilley, Tom Akins and Tommy Strickland. Clarence Brown, Larry Crane, Jimmy Don Crane, Jack Nally, Eddie Mills, C.L. Tidwell and Clark Millsap will serve as honorary pallbearers.
